Our customer service receives daily inquiries about which domains companies should register. Encouraged by this, we have decided to compile a small information package for businesses. Our customer service is happy to assist you in choosing the right domain extensions for your company, so if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us.

Before delving into the main topic, it is good to consider why domain registration is necessary.

1) A domain becomes the address for our website and email, and it is used to market our company. This is a clear reason to register a domain. Additionally, separate websites for the company's products are often created alongside the main website.

2) A domain is used to protect the names of our company or products. Would it be frustrating if a competitor registered a .com domain with your company's or product's name that is available? A good example of this is the widely covered case of www.helsinkigarden.fi.

3) One common reason to register a domain is for investment purposes. Can you think of an available domain name whose value could be hundreds of thousands of euros in a few years?

4) Registering generic names related to your business to improve search engine visibility. In search engine optimization, the domain name plays a significant role in search engine rankings. Try searching on Google for keywords like "remontti helsinki" (renovation Helsinki), "asianajotoimisto" (law firm), and "tanssikoulu" (dance school) - you will find reasonably good results in the organic search results.

So, what should we register?

As a general guideline, the following classification can be considered:

For companies operating in the domestic market, we recommend registering the national .fi domain as the primary domain extension, and as secondary extensions, at least .com, .net, and .eu. The secondary domains can be redirected to the .fi domain, ensuring that the website opens and email forwarding works for all extensions.

For internationally operating companies, we recommend the .com or .eu domain as the primary domain extension, and as secondary extensions, at least .fi and .net.

The choice before the domain extension depends a lot on your business. In most cases, the company's or brand's name, or an abbreviation of it, is sufficient. However, in some cases, it may be worth considering a generic name related to your business to maximize search engine visibility if the name is still available.

Whether you operate domestically or internationally, it is essential to remember to protect your trademarks comprehensively to prevent later regret when a competitor registers international domains using your product names.

The .fi domain can contain 2-63 characters.

Allowed characters in domain names are:

  • Letters a-z

  • Numbers 0-9

  • Hyphen/minus sign (-)

The hyphen/minus sign cannot be the first or last character of the domain name. The third and fourth characters cannot both be hyphens/minus signs.

An exception is made for national domains in ACE format (ASCII Compatible Encoding). In ACE format, the third and fourth characters can both be hyphens/minus signs.

Allowed national characters in domain names are:

  • Letters å, ä, and ö

  • Characters used in the Sami language spoken in Finland

Each domain name registrant is responsible for the legality of the registered domain name. The domain name must not infringe on the protected name or trademark of another entity. A user who registers a domain name that infringes on another's name can lose the registered domain name if demanded by the holder of the infringed name or trademark.

We recommend checking before registering a domain name to ensure it does not infringe on a protected name or trademark in Finland and the EU.

Protected names or trademarks include:
